In daily analysis, you may often encounter this need: how to clearly see the relationship between two variables while also gaining an at-a-glance understanding of their individual distributions? For example, a sales manager may not only want to know whether “customer activity” is related to “spending amount,” but also intuitively understand the distribution levels of each. Similarly, a regional manager may want to analyze the cross-performance of different product categories across various markets while also discovering the overall distribution trends of core categories or key markets. And this is exactly where the Marginal Histogram excels. It allows you to visualize the interaction between variables in a single chart while also quickly grasping the overall distribution of each variable.

Visual structure of a Marginal Histogram

As shown below, a marginal histogram is a composite chart, typically consisting of two parts: a main plot + single-variable distribution plots along the top/bottom/left/right.

PART1 👉 Main Plot (Core Area)

Its purpose is to display the relationship or distribution between two variables (such as correlation, cross-performance, clustering, outliers, etc.). Common chart types used in the main plot include:

Scatter plot: for two continuous numeric variables (e.g., Sales × Discount, Age × Income)

Highlight table/heat map: for two categorical variables (e.g., Region × Category, Department × Grade)

Heat map: also usable for bivariate density distributions

PART2 👉 Marginal Histograms (Edge Areas)

These display the univariate distribution characteristics of each variable (e.g., high/low distribution, outliers, dominant intervals).

From a layout perspective, top or bottom marginal histograms correspond to the X-axis variable, while right or left marginal histograms correspond to the Y-axis variable.

From a color perspective, scatter/dots/cells in the main plot are color-coded to distinguish different value ranges, positive vs. negative, or business categories, and marginal histograms can use the same colors to highlight extremes, frequent values, or outliers.

When placed on a dashboard with interactive filtering, both the main plot and marginal histograms can update together based on business fields (e.g., region, customer group, time period).

Traditional methods VS Extensions

Taking Tableau as an example: while users can manually build separate scatter plots and bar charts, then simulate a “main + distribution” layout by combining them in a dashboard, the process is often tedious—requiring repeated axis adjustments, alignment formatting, linked filtering, and binning. This is inefficient and prone to error.

Moreover, if you want categorical or measure-based marginal histograms, the steps get even more complex:

You need to manually create bins, auxiliary axes, dual-axis synchronizations, with no guaranteed interaction.

It gets harder to configure across multiple dimensions (e.g., Region × Category × Segment).

Business users can’t easily reuse the setup, leaving analysts burdened with heavy maintenance.

The good news is: Tableau Exchange now offers this visualization as a Viz Extension. So you no longer need to manually configure axes or bins—you can quickly build such complex charts.

In short, just add the MarginalHistogram visualization extension in Tableau’s “Marks” card, choose the main and marginal variables, and it will automatically generate:

01 Categorical Marginal Histogram

Categorical marginal histograms are useful for analyzing multi-dimensional discrete data (e.g., region, sub-category, customer segment) and visually comparing distributions and aggregations across dimensions.

For discrete dimensions like “Region × Product Subcategory × Customer Segment,” the Marginal Histogram extension will automatically recognize and generate categorical marginal histograms. As shown above, through positive/negative blocks and top marginal bars, you can intuitively compare profitability across different segments in regions and categories:

Identify profitable/unprofitable categories and key markets at a glance

Help sales/management teams focus on weak spots and optimize channel/product strategies

Compare performance across Segments for differentiated operations

02 Numerical Marginal Histogram

Numerical marginal histograms combine scatter plots with histograms to reveal joint and individual distributions of continuous variables (e.g., Sales, Profit, Discount).

For continuous data like “Sales × Average Discount,” numerical marginal histograms plus scatter plots let you analyze customer structure, outliers, and overall business characteristics in one view:

Quickly identify high-sales/high-discount risk or key customers

Marginal histograms show that most customers cluster at low ranges, helping identify long-tail vs. core customer groups

Use filters to flexibly explore distributions across regions or segments, enhancing refined operations

Example Demo: Superstore Profit Analysis

Next, we’ll use Tableau’s built-in Superstore dataset to demonstrate how to quickly create marginal histograms and use them for interactive analysis on a dashboard.

In the profit performance dashboard below, combining marginal histograms with maps and time-series line charts provides a holistic view of profit distribution across dimensions, helping discover profit structures, identify high/low performing regions, and monitor fluctuations for business optimization and strategy.

Specific steps:

01 Create a Categorical Marginal Histogram

In Tableau Desktop, connect to the Superstore dataset and create a new worksheet.

Then, in the “Marks” card, expand the mark type dropdown, click “Add Extension,” search for MarginalHistogram, and install it.

Next, create a numerical marginal histogram. In the “Data” pane, drag fields into the “Marks” card:

Drag dimension “Segment” to the X-axis to show three customer segments.

Drag date field “Order Date” to the Y-axis and change it to discrete weekdays, so the Y-axis shows days of the week instead of years.

Drag measure “Profit” to Measure to calculate and color the profitability of each cell.

Now the categorical marginal histogram is ready. You can see:

Each cell in the main plot reflects profit performance of the three segments across weekdays, with darker colors and higher values indicating higher profit.

The top marginal histogram shows total profit by customer segment, enabling instant comparison of overall contributions.

The right marginal histogram summarizes total profit by weekday, helping detect business peaks and troughs.

The top-right KPI highlights total profit and percentage, emphasizing overall performance.

If you need to configure the visualization, click the format button in the “Marks” card. The MarginalHistogram extension supports the following settings:

👉 Field & Logic Settings (Calcs)

X/Y axis selection: categorical variables for dimensions, numerical for measures.

Measure/custom measures: directly define new measures with expressions in Calcs and add them to the view.

Supports point-and-click field selection and basic calculations for easy custom KPIs.

👉 Number Formatting & Units (Numbers)

Supports unit abbreviations (K, M), decimal places, currency symbols ($, ¥), and different formats (numeric/percentage) for each measure.

👉 Visual Formatting & Layout (Formats)

Control visibility of axes, gridlines, zero lines, axis titles for readability.

Adjust marginal histogram height, main plot spacing, facet spacing, and padding to fit report styles.

Flexibly set the number of facets per page for multi-dimensional comparisons.

👉 Color Logic (Color)

Configure colors for positive (profit) and negative (loss) values (e.g., blue/pink) for instant distinction.

Supports unified background, axis, and point colors, or custom brand colors.

Heatmap and scatterplot styles can be switched anytime.

👉 Scatter/Binning Settings (Scatter)

Set the number of bins for marginal histograms to analyze distributions at different granularities.

Control whether scatterplot labels (e.g., large customer names) are displayed and whether they can overlap.

02 Create a Profit Ratio Map

Create a new worksheet, double-click the “State/Province” field in the Data pane, and Tableau will auto-generate a symbol map.

Create a calculated field named “Profit Ratio” with the expression SUM([Profit])/SUM([Sales]) and drag it to the “Marks” card color shelf.

If needed, adjust legend colors and map background to remove unnecessary elements for a cleaner look.

03 Create a Category Profit Line Chart by Quarter

Create a new worksheet, drag Order Date to Columns, Profit to Rows, and Category to the “Marks” color shelf. Right-click the Order Date pill and convert it to continuous Quarters.

04 Build a Dashboard and Set Interactivity

Create a new dashboard, drag the three worksheets into the canvas, and adjust the layout. Then, for each worksheet, click the funnel icon in the toolbar to set it as a filter.

This way, clicking any mark in the views applies global filtering across the dashboard, allowing deeper exploration of Superstore profit performance across dimensions.

The post Best Practices | Visualize Financial Metrics with Tableau Extensions to Enhance Banking and Loan Analysis first appeared on DKM Ecosystem.

In the banking and financial sectors, organizations often need to track multiple dimensions of financial metrics simultaneously—maintaining a macro view of business trends while also drilling down into individual records to identify risks and opportunities in a timely manner.

However, traditional reporting tools struggle to meet the real-world needs of being efficient, flexible, and visually appealing. As a result, more analysts are turning to Tableau extensions to bring financial visualizations closer to business operations.

Take bank loan analysis as an example. Business teams want a single dashboard that dynamically tracks loan issuance, repayments, and defaults across different loan types, while also profiling customers to support risk management and targeted marketing.

To meet such demands, you can use visualization extensions like PowerKPI and SuperTables to enable end-to-end data visualization and intelligent analysis.

Financial Metrics Dashboard

The dashboard below combines PowerKPI and SuperTables to deliver a smart visualization solution that integrates multidimensional monitoring, dynamic comparisons, customer insights, and detailed data tracing.

This dashboard helps track key indicators such as loan balance and default rate in real time (cards), and also supports flexible dimensional analysis—filtering by year, loan type, or customer profiles (e.g., marital status, employment)—to reveal business trends dynamically.

With the PowerKPI extension, actual and predicted values are displayed side by side, with changes and deviations highlighted to help management monitor goal progress and adjust strategies promptly.

The SuperTables extension enhances retrieval and drilling into detailed data, enabling one-click access to business records and historical data directly within the dashboard—greatly improving audit and risk control efficiency.

With this solution, both decision-makers and front-line analysts can collaborate efficiently within a single interactive interface to drive business growth with data.

Steps to Build a Financial Metrics Dashboard

#1 Data Import

Adding PowerKPI to a dashboard is straightforward. First, import a structured loan dataset into Tableau.

As shown in the figure below, the sample dataset includes key information such as year, loan type, loan status, amount, and predicted values. This enables multi-level filtering and comparative analysis across different dimensions.

#2 Create Actual + Predicted KPI Cards

To use the PowerKPI extension, go to the “Marks” card in a Tableau worksheet, click “Add an Extension,” and search for “PowerKPI” to download and install it.

Then, drag actual measures like “Loan Balance” and “Default Rate,” along with corresponding “Predicted” measures, into the relevant fields of the Marks card.

The PowerKPI extension will automatically recognize and display actual vs. predicted values on each KPI card. You can freely adjust the layout, colors, and icon styles to achieve an enterprise-grade visualization experience.

Note that to display dashed lines (representing predicted values) correctly, each actual measure must have a corresponding predicted measure named “Predicted.” PowerKPI will automatically read and distinguish actual vs. predicted data for each card.

As seen in the gif, PowerKPI offers an intuitive configuration interface. You can choose the card layout (e.g., grid or tree), define the dimension members each card represents (e.g., different loan types), and assign main and comparison values. Differences from predicted values are calculated and highlighted automatically.

You can also use the Format tab to set positive/negative color schemes, and the Chart tab to assign different chart types to each indicator—enabling highly customized, intuitive, and efficient analysis.

、

Best of all, all settings support real-time previews, greatly improving the dashboard-building experience.

Enable Drill-Down and Interactive Analysis

After setting up the KPI cards, you can use the same method to enable the SuperTables extension for enhanced detailed data analysis.

Next, drag detailed fields such as Loan ID, customer info, and disbursement time into the SuperTables configuration panel. Business users can then click buttons like “Monthly Overview” to switch to detailed views, quickly locate specific loans or records, and use powerful built-in search, filter, and sorting features to find data efficiently.

Free Trial of Tableau Extensions

Whether it’s financial lending, budget management, or risk monitoring, seamless integration of PowerKPI and SuperTables empowers both business users and decision-makers to track macro trends and drill down into every key data point—delivering full-process, full-scenario intelligent financial metric visualization.

In the daily work of sales teams, making decisions based on “gut feeling” often means missed opportunities. Only by leveraging data can the team focus their energy on the most important customers, the most valuable opportunities, and the processes that most need follow-up.

However, creating truly useful Tableau dashboards that the sales team will actually use can involve many considerations—and it can feel overwhelming.

Don’t worry! Today, we’re sharing 7 classic sales analytics dashboard examples, exploring the problems they solve so you can create more useful, efficient sales reports for different users~

01 Quarterly Sales Forecast Dashboard

As shown below, this dashboard is primarily for sales analysts to systematically and structurally conduct quarterly sales forecasting. It’s not just a forecasting calculator, but also a practical data analysis tool.

With a single page, you can get a comprehensive overview of all sales opportunities, pipeline distribution, progress at each stage, and which potential deals are likely to accelerate or grow in the future.

More importantly, it allows you to compare various forecast scenarios (committed forecast, possible forecast, best forecast) against quarterly goals in real time, helping the team identify risks early and course-correct before it’s too late.

》Dashboard Breakdown

👉 Current Business Overview

The top view displays key metrics such as total value, number of opportunities, and expected revenue to quickly present overall progress for the quarter. You can filter by region, salesperson, and other dimensions to understand performance across different segments.

👉 Step 1: Forecast Undiscovered Opportunities Using Historical Data

The “Historical reference” section at the top left uses data from past quarters to estimate potential business not yet uncovered this quarter. For example, based on how many new opportunities emerged at each stage in previous quarters, it reasonably predicts how many new opportunities may still arise this quarter. This helps identify hidden sales potential early for more complete forecasting.

👉 Step 2: Analyze Existing Pipeline Opportunities, Including Large Deals

Breaks down the transactional and non-transactional pipeline. Opportunity value and count at each stage, as well as close probabilities, are clearly displayed. High-value deals (e.g., over $2 million) are shown and tracked separately to provide a specialized view of key accounts.

👉 Step 3: Identify Opportunities Likely to Close Faster or Grow

The dashboard lists opportunities likely to accelerate or grow soon, including the responsible salesperson, expected close date, and amount—helping the team prioritize the most convertible customers to improve overall win rates.

👉 Step 4: Compare Forecasts Against Targets

The bottom section is the “results output zone,” showing performance forecasts under various scenarios (committed, possible, best), with visual indicators (red/yellow/green) to highlight gaps with targets. Alerts are triggered if forecasts fall short, allowing for timely strategy adjustments.

》Typical Use Cases

At the beginning of each quarter, analysts use this dashboard to aggregate global data, forecast quarterly sales, and compare forecast types with target KPIs (YoY).

Management uses the data during monthly or quarterly meetings to support decisions, such as whether to adjust incentives or reallocate resources.

Sales teams monitor key clients and large opportunities in real time to avoid missing high-value leads.

Recently, Gartner® released the 2025 Magic Quadrant™ for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms.

Tableau has remained a Leader in the quadrant for the 13th consecutive year, thanks to its robust product capabilities, innovative AI technologies, and broad customer recognition.

According to Gartner’s summary, Tableau’s leadership position is supported by several key advantages:

01 Outstanding Agentic AI Capabilities

Gartner notes that in 2025, Tableau launched its next-generation analytics platform, Tableau Next—an intelligent platform built on an open lakehouse architecture that integrates structured, unstructured, and real-time streaming data.

With the Tableau AI semantic layer, data is more closely connected to business scenarios. AI Agents can proactively suggest and incorporate business semantics, enabling seamless integration between data insights and business workflows.

Other highlights of Tableau AI include Einstein Discovery, Data Guide, and Tableau Pulse, which aim to help organizations gain automated insights more efficiently.

Einstein Discovery provides key driver analysis to help users understand what factors are influencing business outcomes. Data Guide clarifies complex data relationships through correlation analysis. Tableau Pulse actively monitors trends and anomalies, pushing insights in real-time via Slack, MS Teams, and email.

Together, these features make Tableau a truly intelligent analytics platform. It simplifies data blending and transformation while delivering comprehensive analytical capabilities—even enabling non-technical business users to conduct deep data analysis with ease.

02 Flexible and Scalable Deployment

For enterprises with cross-regional operations, Tableau demonstrates outstanding flexibility and scalability.

On one hand, Tableau Server supports flexible deployment on major cloud providers such as Azure, Alibaba Cloud, Google Cloud, and AWS, and enables Agentic capabilities through Tableau LangChain. As a SaaS application, Tableau Cloud runs entirely on AWS.

On the other hand, this flexibility is not only reflected in deployment options, but also in data management capabilities. Tableau supports operations across data lakes, on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments, enabling organizations to leverage existing data assets efficiently while strictly adhering to governance policies.

This is a significant advantage for multinational enterprises that must comply with varying data regulations across regions.

03 Strong User Community and Customer Support

According to Gartner Peer Insights, Tableau customers often cite its vibrant user community, professional services expertise, and product functionality and performance as key decision factors. This community-driven knowledge sharing delivers immense value, especially for new users.

More importantly, the community actively contributes to Tableau’s product strategy and innovation. In the past year, Tableau has introduced over 140 product innovations across its cloud, server, and desktop offerings, many inspired by community feedback and suggestions.

This co-creation model ensures that every Tableau innovation aligns with real user needs.

How Tableau AI Is Reshaping the Analytics Experience

Finding insights is only the first step—turning them into actions is the key to driving impact.

At the recent 2025 Gartner BI Bake-Off, Tableau’s product team showcased how Agentic Analytics, powered by autonomous and assisted AI, is transforming data-driven decision-making, and how enterprises can embed data across daily workflows:

👉 Tableau Agent acts as an assistant—not a replacement for human experts. With conversational analytics, Tableau Agent can provide recommendations, quickly deliver requested results, and even suggest new calculations.

👉 As a unified data layer for structured and unstructured data, Data Cloud offers a visual map of all raw data. Even when source data is messy, it can be accurately mapped with minimal effort—freeing teams to focus on solving business problems with trusted, well-structured information.

👉 A standout innovation is the Pulse Research Agent, which not only helps organizations understand what is happening in their data—but more importantly, why it’s happening.

In today’s data-driven world, uncovering insights is no longer enough—what truly matters is transforming those insights into actionable outcomes.

Whether you’re analyzing customer behavior, optimizing production processes, or evaluating public policy impact, it’s essential to go beyond simple charts and statistics to communicate valuable insights clearly and effectively.

The multi-agent AI assistant — Jupybara — was built precisely for this purpose.

This tool was officially introduced by the Tableau Research team at ACM CHI 2025, a premier international conference on human-computer interaction.

The team includes Will (Huichen) Wang, a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington and Tableau intern, Tableau Research Director Vidya Setlur, and Northwestern University Professor Larry Birnbaum.

Let’s explore the motivation and process behind this research, and how Jupybara helps analysts turn data into clear, persuasive, and actionable stories within the Jupyter Notebook environment.

From Data Exploration to Result Communication

As an AI agent–powered smart assistant, Jupybara supports the full data analysis workflow—from initial exploratory data analysis (EDA) to insight-driven storytelling. It’s implemented as a Jupyter Notebook extension, integrating large language models (LLMs) directly into the analyst’s working environment to enable human-AI collaboration.

As shown above, this is the Jupybara interface. Through its Jupyter Notebook extension format, it supports actionable EDA and data storytelling:

(A) On the left, when exploring complex data, Jupybara first generates and displays an analysis plan before outputting code.

(B) On the right, in the generated data story, Jupybara articulates the analysis results with precise language, including an introduction, transitions, and strategy explanations. It helps users gain deeper insights and uses domain knowledge to translate data findings into action plans.

Additionally, based on a three-dimensional design framework, Jupybara integrates data visualization theory, narrative logic, and communication principles. These dimensions guide how Jupybara generates, optimizes, and refines data stories—ultimately converting insights into real-world impact.

01 Semantic Precision

Ensures that data insights are communicated with both accuracy and factual grounding.

For example, when describing a steep decline in average hourly wages, Jupybara might suggest terms like “decline,” “decrease,” or “plummet,” each with a distinct semantic tone—showing how language can stay tightly aligned with statistical trends.

02 Rhetorical Framing

Enables persuasive, audience-targeted communication so insights resonate with intended recipients.

For instance, when analyzing gender pay gaps, Jupybara’s story assistant might begin with a headline-style statement: “Women in full-time roles earn 17% less than men,” followed by explanatory detail: “Even after adjusting for industry and education, the gap persists—indicating systemic bias rather than structural factors.”

03 Real-World Relevance

Connects insights directly to real decision-making contexts, combining industry background with practical action.

For example, upon detecting a significant gender pay gap in full-time roles, Jupybara might recommend: “Organizations should establish transparent pay systems and conduct biannual gender-based promotion audits.”

Multi-Agent Collaboration for Human-AI Co-analysis

Jupybara introduces a multi-agent architecture in which different LLM-based agents specialize in distinct tasks throughout the analysis and storytelling process: some interpret statistical results and visualizations, others check for clarity and persuasiveness, while others ensure alignment with specific industry contexts.

Illustration: Jupybara’s multi-agent collaboration process in data storytelling, showing how the three-dimensional design framework (semantic, rhetorical, practical) is applied in generating and refining analytical narratives.

This division of responsibilities is inspired by how human analysts collaborate as a team, enabling iterative refinement of both analysis and storytelling.

Of course, for simpler or time-sensitive tasks, Jupybara also supports a single-agent mode. However, the multi-agent approach opens new possibilities for future research—especially in complex scenarios that require layered reasoning, peer review, or flexible narrative adjustments.

Insights from Cross-Industry Practice

To evaluate how analysts interact with AI-assisted tools in exploratory data analysis (EDA) and storytelling, the research team invited nine experienced analysts from finance, healthcare, retail, and other industries to test Jupybara.

Participants used both the single-agent and multi-agent versions to complete an EDA task and generate a data story using a dataset relevant to their domain expertise.

Analysts generally found Jupybara’s “insight tracker” helpful in reducing the mental load of remembering and organizing the analysis process, keeping thought processes and history more transparent. The “clarification tab” enabled targeted dialogue with the AI to better understand the analysis results it provided.

Additionally, Jupybara proved valuable for refining how analytical conclusions are expressed. Semantic and rhetorical suggestions helped analysts choose better wording and build more persuasive narrative structures.

Jupybara’s suggestions for analytical strategies were also highly practical—such as explaining the rationale behind handling missing values—supporting reflection and explanation of their methodological choices.

Illustration: Jupybara interface showing an automatically generated analysis report and actionable recommendations with highlights for key points and improvement areas.

Overall, participants consistently agreed that outputs from the multi-agent architecture outperformed single-agent results in terms of semantic precision, rhetorical effectiveness, and real-world relevance.

More Than an Analyst Tool — A Research Platform

Jupybara is not only a powerful tool for improving analyst productivity, but also a research platform for exploring human-AI collaboration. Tableau Research’s evaluations show that Jupybara excels in usability, controllability, explainability, and revisability—key factors in building effective human-AI collaborative systems.

As multi-agent AI tools become more prevalent, Jupybara is just the beginning. In the future, the Tableau Research team may explore agents specialized by domain (e.g., healthcare or finance) or narrative style—or systems that can autonomously adjust analytical strategies based on evolving data.

The post Tableau Research | Unlocking Actionable Insights: Multi-Agent AI Assistants for Data Analysis and Storytelling first appeared on DKM Ecosystem.

In visual analysis, outliers can obscure subtle differences in data.

Imagine analyzing sales performance across thousands of regions—if there are a few extremely high or low outliers in the data, those values, while noteworthy, can distort the entire color scale, making it difficult to distinguish nuanced differences between the majority of data points.

Ultimately, the entire map might end up in a single hue—or reduced to black and white. The truly important “middle ground,” where the most valuable insights often lie, gets buried.

Previously, Tableau only offered two modes for setting color ranges (palettes/scales): “Fixed” and “Automatic.” While sufficient in basic scenarios, they had clear limitations:

Users with view-only access couldn’t adjust the color range, limiting their ability to explore and analyze data on their own.

Automatic mode adjusted color ranges based only on data in the current view, meaning users couldn’t see the relationship between filtered-out and remaining data.

To address these issues, Tableau 2025.2 introduced “Dynamic Color Ranges,” enabling analysts to more effectively handle outliers and helping dashboard users better understand the data. This allows you to show the full dataset while diving deeper into the most meaningful insights.
Dynamic Color Ranges in Tableau

In Tableau 2025.2, the Quantitative Color Palette dialog received a major upgrade. In addition to a new interface, a powerful new capability was integrated into the core of data coloring—making the existing experience smoother, smarter, and more flexible than ever.

The key innovation: color range values (start, end, or even center) can now be dynamically linked to parameter values. This means that the color legend’s scale is no longer a fixed number, but can be controlled by any parameter set within Tableau.

This gives color ranges real intelligence and interactivity—not only responding in real-time to user inputs but also automatically adapting to underlying data updates. Such flexibility ensures that your visualizations always highlight the most critical, impactful insights.

This highly anticipated enhancement continues Tableau’s vision of using parameter interactivity to create dynamic axes, offering users greater control and deeper analytical capability. What was once a static color legend is now a dynamic tool to illuminate the value of your data.

Three Ways to Use Dynamic Color Ranges

As mentioned above, dynamic color ranges fundamentally change how users interact with data visualizations. By linking color range values to parameters, not only can previously mentioned challenges be solved, but entirely new possibilities are unlocked through Tableau’s core feature—parameters.

01 Enable Parameter Controls

The simplest way to use this feature is to expose the parameter control. This allows users—even without edit permissions—to manually adjust the color range, removing dependency on predefined color scales.

By changing the range values in real-time according to their needs, users can independently explore data—for example, posing “what if” scenarios and discovering insights from different angles.

02 Combine with Parameter Actions for Interactive Exploration

The true power of dynamic color ranges lies in combining them with parameter actions to create a more advanced interactive experience. By selecting data or hovering over a mark, users can dynamically adjust the color range and immediately see related data updates. As shown below, users can manually select or use tooltips to interactively refresh color scales, making analysis more intuitive.

03 Synchronize Color Range Values Across Multiple Views

For analysts, maintaining consistent color ranges across multiple related visualizations in a dashboard has always been a challenge.

Dynamic color ranges solve this effortlessly. Simply apply the same parameter to multiple color legends, and the color ranges across views will stay synchronized. This enhances analytical consistency, clarifies visual comparisons, and reduces cognitive load for users—ensuring consistent visual styling.

As shown below, hovering over a country can instantly sync its effect across all views linked by that parameter.

Use Cases for Dynamic Color Ranges

As a foundational capability, dynamic color ranges are like building blocks that empower analysts to create more advanced analytics.

As described above, when paired with other interactive features, dynamic color ranges offer users a new way to explore data and unlock real-time insights. Here are three innovative use cases:

👉 Outlier Filtering: You can set range aggregation to the first or third quartile (instead of min/max), automatically ignoring outliers that distort coloring.

👉 Multi-Dimensional Tooltips: Add more fields to your views so tooltip-driven selections support multi-dimensional filtering.

👉 Dynamic Parameter Linking: Configure parameters to auto-refresh with data updates for truly intelligent color range adjustments.

Clearer visual analysis means more people can easily access insights. When using “Dynamic Color Ranges” to highlight data details, consider how these dynamic controls can also improve dashboard usability and accessibility.
Flexible color scaling not only meets different user preferences but also ensures key data contrasts remain visible—even for users with different assistive tools or color modes. This inclusive design ensures your analytical outcomes can be understood and used by a broader audience.

The post Use the new Tableau dynamic color range to achieve more granular visual analysis first appeared on DKM Ecosystem.

At the TC25 conference held in mid-April, the Tableau product development team showcased multiple innovative features. Excitingly, some of these features will be available in the new summer release!

Today, let’s take an early look at the highlights of Tableau 2025.2 and see how they will enhance the business analytics workflow.

01 Instant Visualization with “Show Me”

As demonstrated at TC25, Tableau’s classic “Show Me” feature is getting its biggest upgrade ever!

In previous versions, users had to pre-select fields to match visualizations. In the new version, “Show Me” allows direct previews of all preset visualization types.

Not only that, users can click the “Choose for Me” button to automatically match data to the selected visualization type, or double-click to switch between different charts to explore the best way to present their data.

Even better, the Viz Extensions entry is now embedded in “Show Me.” No more digging through the “Marks” card dropdown menu—just quickly open the “Add Extension” window and freely choose advanced visualizations!

With this enhancement, even beginners can start analyzing with a single click. For experienced users, data exploration in Tableau becomes more efficient, and visualization design gains more freedom.

02 Dynamic Color Ranges

No more worries about outliers! Tableau 2025.2 introduces “Dynamic Color Ranges,” ensuring key insights stand out even with outlier data.

Simply adjust the color scale flexibly via parameters to focus your audience’s attention on critical areas. It’s a faster and more flexible way to keep your visualizations clear and insightful.

03 Dynamic Spatial Parameters

Geospatial analysis just got better! In Tableau 2025.2, by creating spatial parameters, you can dynamically filter data based on maps, automatically adjust mark sizes when zooming, and synchronize updates across multiple maps.

The entire process delivers smoother, more interactive maps without cumbersome page reloads.

04 Databricks Connector Updates

Great news for Databricks users! The upgraded connector now supports OAuth and token refresh, enhancing security. For enterprise-scale datasets, you can connect, refresh, and model Databricks data more efficiently and reliably.

05 Tableau for GWS App Plugin

The newly upgraded Tableau for Google Workspace app is here! For enterprise users leveraging both Tableau Cloud and Google Workspace, this free integration plugin enables seamless analytics collaboration without switching apps.

Currently, you can embed Tableau worksheets, dashboards, and Pulse metrics directly into Google Docs and Google Slides, with real-time data refreshes. Support for Google Sheets is coming later this year.

This allows businesses to embed data reports directly into online office documents, accelerating internal collaboration and driving data-driven decision-making further!

PS: Besides Google Workspace, Tableau has also launched a Microsoft Teams integration plugin. Learn more here: Accelerate Data-Driven Decisions and Collaboration with Tableau in Microsoft Teams.

06 Tableau Pulse: Certified Metrics

Who says data can’t be trusted at a glance? In the new Pulse metrics insights, certified key metrics display a ✅ badge, making it easy to identify authoritative data sources and empowering decision-makers to act confidently on insights.

07 Private Connections: Support for More Databases

In the 2025.2 release, Tableau Cloud users can securely connect to databases like PGSQL, MySQL, MSSQL, OracleDB, and Aurora via AWS Private Link. With end-to-end private channels, public network risks are eliminated, ensuring stronger data security.

08 Cloud Session Recovery Optimizations

Offline access to Tableau Cloud? Yes! The new Tableau Cloud supports extended session recovery and offline visualization interaction, maintaining some functionality even for large visualizations.

Especially in critical scenarios like dashboard presentations, operations won’t be interrupted, letting you focus on business without connectivity anxiety.

As shown below, after disconnecting, the floating toolbar replaces the “Offline” prompt with new buttons, allowing users to continue offline interactions while displaying real-time reconnection status until the network is restored.

09 Tableau Next: Concierge

In the Agentic era, every company is actively developing and deploying AI Agents—Salesforce and Tableau are no exception.

On the new Tableau Next platform, the preconfigured data assistant Concierge, powered by Agentforce, enables users to ask questions in natural language and receive trustworthy, actionable answers and visual insights. This accelerates data value discovery, deeper exploration, and faster decision-making.

10 Tableau Next: Data Pro

Another preconfigured AI Agent, Data Pro (Data Expert), also powered by Agentforce, helps Tableau Next users speed up data preparation and modeling workflows.

The recently launched capabilities include semantic model optimization, such as auto-recommending field relationships and auto-creating calculated fields. PS: Data Pro will debut as a Beta release.

The post Tableau 2025.2 is coming soon, what new features are you looking forward to? first appeared on DKM Ecosystem.
